In about 1920 [Fortuny] decorated the gaming rooms of the Hotel Excelsior on the Lido of Venice. He did not paper the walls, but hung materials like enormous curtains from rails placed just below ceiling level. Their folds gave a feeling of movement and warmth to the rooms, as well as producing a play of light that heightened their colour.
