One of the most memorable moments of Honors BIS was the privilege of touring the TCU Data Center within Sid Richardson Building. Although this is not a picture of the room, the picture conveys the number of servers and wires that were present in the room. This experience was an excellent opportunity to see a real-world example of how technology impacts student and academic life at TCU. With Bryan Lucas, the class explored some of the issues and limitations of current technology.
For Prineville, Facebook is a big business operation – a fact reflected in the power required to operate the first phase of the data center. The 28 megawatts of utility power for the 300,000 square foot first phase isn’t extraordinary for a data center of that size. But it stands out in Crook County, where all the homes and business other than Facebook use 30 megawatts of power. Side note: Population: 9,192 (2011)
