When Orb won the 139th Kentucky Derby, he became the first classic winner for his sire, the 16-year-old Spendthrift Farm stallion Malibu Moon, and the colt’s emphatic score adds more luster to A.P. Indy, whose influence on contemporary Thoroughbred racing and breeding continues to grow.
Bodemeister, a Grade 1 winner and dual classic runner-up, was named 2012 Virginia-bred Horse of the Year by the Virginia Thoroughbred Association. The now-4-year-old son of Empire Maker was among the elite sophomores of 2012, winning the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, and leading deep in the stretch of both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes before being caught both times by I’ll Have Another. In total.
Ferdinand (3-12-83 – 2002) was a Thoroughbred who won the 1986 Kentucky Derby. He was voted the 1987 Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year. He entered stud in 1989 & was sold to a breeding farm in Japan in 1994. Much to the outrage of horse racing enthusiasts, reports indicate that in 2002 Ferdinand was sent to slaughter in Japan with no fanfare or notice to previous owners. His death was the catalyst for the Ferdinand Fee, a program to fund keeping old racehorses alive.
