The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls When I asked for reading suggestions at the end of my last book club chat, many of you said The Glass Castle. It’s the memoir of a girl growing up in a very eclectic and cash-strapped family.
" At the temple there is a poem called “Loss” carved into the stone. It has three words, but the poet has scratched them out. You cannot read loss, only feel it." Sayuri in Memoirs of a Geisha, Arthur Golden
Move past the traditional personal narrative and have students write their own memoirs. This unit has everything you need including a mentor text (with comprehension questions), sample memoir, guides for writing, a unit plan, Common Core alignment (all standards listed grades 6-8) and a day by day lesson plan. The memoir guidelines (each memoir can be a page) and rubric makes grading manageable. Some of the best writing from my students came from this unit! $
