John Trumbull's painting, "The Surrender of Burgoyne" depicts the surrender of British General Burgoyne at Saratoga, New York in 1777 -- a turning point in the Revolutionary War. The American General, Horatio Gates stands in the center of the painting wearing a blue coat. Burgoyne, who is wearing red, is offering his sword to Gates, who refuses to take it. Trumbull, who served in the Continental Army under General Washington, painted each figure in the painting as a portrait.
