The atomic submarine, USS Thresher, sank in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of New England, April, 10, 1963, while on a training mission. The entire crew of 129 including officers, sailors & civilians perished. Launched in 1960, the USS Thresher was the 1st of the new class of atomic submarines which are said to be quieter & can reach greater depths than previous atomic subs.
On June 19, 1964 the US Senate passed the Civil Rights Bill by a vote of 73-27 after 54 working days of filibuster since it was introduced in March. This was the first time the Senate had invoked cloture since 1927. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the bill two weeks later on July 2, 1964. #TodayInBlackHistory
