The huge, exquisitely wheels carved at the base of the Konark Temple are one of the major attractions. The spokes of the wheels serve as sundials and the shadows cast by these can give the precise time of the day.
The Sun Temple, also known as "The Black Pagoda? was built in the century and designed as a gigantic chariot of the Sun God, Surya, with twelve pairs of ornamented wheels pulled by seven horses. Some of the wheels are 3 meters wide.
