Sacred Kingfisher -- this colourful little bird only occasionally fishes for its dinner. Like its bigger cousin, the kookaburra, the kingfisher's diet consists mainly of small animals such as insects and lizards, which it kills by beating them on a branch. That said, kingfishers aren't averse to a fish meal, and have been observed poaching fish from backyard ponds.
Satin bowerbird (Ptilonorhynchus violaceus) - male. Native to Australia's southeast coast, the species, like all bowerbirds, has complex and unique courtship behaviors. Males build elaborate bowers decorated with blue ornaments from flowers to bottle caps; and females choose a mate from the quality of display. photo: Chris Chafer.
