KAZUO ISHIGURO (b. 1954), Japanese-British novelist: Son of a Japanese oceanographer who grew up in Shanghai, his family moved from Japan to England when he was 5. Though planning to stay only a few years, they remained long-term. He attended English school, but at home they spoke Japanese & incorporated their Japanese roots.
