John Renwick enlisted in May 1861 the 3rd Louisiana Infantry as its sergeant major. Renwick was a graduate of the Kentucky Military Institute; he is wearing his Kentucky Military Institute uniform in the photograph. At the Battle of Wilson’s Creek on August 10, 1861, the 3rd Louisiana were sent to hold the right flank of the Confederate line; Renwick was killed in the initial volley from U. S. Regulars in the Ray Cornfield.
Benjamin Hardin Helm (June 2, 1831 – September 21, 1863)was a Kentucky politician, attorney, Confederate brigadier general, & a brother-in-law of Abraham Lincoln. He was also the son of Kentucky Governor John L. Helm. Helm was born in Bardstown, Kentucky. He attended the Kentucky Military Institute & the West Point Military Academy & then went to study law at the University of Louisville & Harvard University. He served as a state legislator & the state's attorney in Kentucky.
