An electric rail car passes the original Highland Park Presbyterian Church on Woodward in 1905. Real estate investors, finding it almost impossible to sell their platted areas, promoted the extension of rail transportation from Detroit to the village to encourage land sales.
Sometimes known as the Woodward Corridor Killer, Benjamin Atkins killed 11 women in the early 90s. Each of his victims were raped and strangled in Highland Park, Michigan. When caught, Atkins claimed he killed the women because he has hated prostitutes ever since he saw his mother as a sex worker when he was a child. He was sentenced to life in prison but died of HIV in 1997 at age 29.
