Medieval Banner- A strictly-controlled type of flag carried by a knight as per ranking. Bottom were Knights Bachelor, landless with little battle experience. They carried a pennoncelle(small square flag with triangular tails) attached to their spear. Higher grades of knight bachelor carried a pennon, triangular flag about 3 ft long. Experienced knights carried tailless rectangular flags called banners. These increased in size by higher grades of knight.
