This view of the Space Shuttle Atlantis still connected to Russia's Mir Space Station was photographed by the Mir-19 crew on July 4, 1995. Cosmonauts Anatoliy Y. Solovyev and Nikolai M. Budarin, Mir-19 Commander and Flight Engineer, respectively, temporarily undocked the Soyuz spacecraft from the cluster of Mir elements to perform a brief fly-around

Astronauts aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis took this photograph of Soviet space station Mir over New Zealand as Atlantis approached Mir prior to docking on March 23rd, 1996.

This technical rendition of Atlantis docked to the Kristall module of the Russian Mir Space Station shows the largest space platform ever assembled, which was completed June of 1995.

The Russian Space Station MIR operated in low Earth orbit from 1986 to 2001 it served as a microgravity research laboratory in which crews conducted experiments in biology, human biology, physics, astronomy, meteorology and spacecraft systems in order to develop technologies required for the permanent occupation of space. A hell-hole to be sure, by all accounts.
