Local Ukrainians in Lvov welcoming the German army in July 1941. Lvov had been a center of nationalist conflicts between Germans, Poles and Ukrainians. When units of the Ukrainian nationalist leader Stefan Bandera joined the German forces in the war against the Soviet Union, they also joined in the killing of Jews. In July alone, more than 2,000 Jews in Lvov fell victim to "action Petlyura" - named in honor of the Ukrainian anti-Bolshevist leader.
