Killer whale ‘Granny,’ the 103-year-old matriarch of the Southern Resident killer whale community, last week led J-Pod up from California into the Strait of Georgia just in time for Mother’s Day in the Northwest. And at 103 this year, Granny (officially known as J2) is thought to be the oldest living orca whale.
Taima, who was bred with Tilikum at the young age of 8. At age 9 she gave birth to Sumar. Six months later she was pregnant with Tekoa. Daughter Malia was born in 2007. Taima went into labor with her 4th calf on June 6, 2010. She and the baby both died.
