While the general background coloration of most glass frogs is primarily lime green, the abdominal skin of some members of this family is translucent. As photographer Mark Cowan traveled down the Amazon, studying reptile and amphibian diversity with the Herpetology Division at the University of Michigan, he captured a phenomenal photo that is as visually stunning as it is educational. Pangolins are found naturally in tropical regions throughout Africa and Asia. The name, pangolin, comes from the Malay word, pengguling, meaning "something that rolls up". A pangolin has large keratin scales covering its skin, and is the only known mammal with this adaptation. Now you know! Very cool animal, sad to see them hunted to near extinction.
