Yosemite National Park - Nevada Fall. This place is made for hiking: I have made the most of the spring sunshine and hiked Valley Loop Trail, Mirror Lake Trail, Lower Yosemite Fall Trail, Mist Trail and, appropriately, the John Muir Trail to give me an intimate feel for this lovely place. This is Nevada Falls, where the Mist Trail and the John Muir Trails meet.

Yosemite National Park - John Muir. This plaque is at the very spot near the Lower Yosemite Falls Trail where John Muir had his cabin.it's an idyllic glade in the forest beside a clear running stream and it's possible to get a sense of the attraction that John Muir felt for this Valley here...and ultimately led him to be instrumental in protecting this and so many other wild places in the US.

Grand Canyon National Park - Bright Angel Trail. This photo gives a good overview of the trail. The route switchbacks down impossible looking cliffs, past the One-And-A-Half Mile Resthouse and the Three Mile Resthouse (no water in winter), then down Jacob's Ladder - more switchbacks through limestone cliffs - to reach the valley floor and the green oasis you can see on the pic which is Indian Garden. A further level hike across the plateau takes you to Plateau Point at the end of the valley.

California Road Trip - Merced River Valley. I took time to stop and smell the roses on the dramatic approach road to the mountains, up the Merced River Valley. It's a great way to climb up from the Central Valley into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, as the road climbs over a pass and drops down into the steeply-sided valley of the Merced River, which in spring is full of melt water off the snow capped mountains Yosemite National Park.

Sequoia National Park - Beetle Rock. This is the place to come for some spectacular sunsets! It was recommended by several locals and it didn't disappoint, as you can see. It's an area of exposed granite at the end of a short trail, beside the Big Trees Trail. The view extends right out across the foothills to the Central Valley and the Coastal Ranges beyond.
