I love star gazing & have always wanted to view them through one of those massive telescopes like at an observatory (would love to visit an Observatory as well. Childhood memory was going to one for a school field trip & remember loving it so much back then as well).
A stunning view across the landscape of West Virginia and something seems just a little incongruous. Like something out of a Thunderbirds episode the National Radio Astronomy Observatory appears as if from nowhere. It was placed in the mountains to ensure the best reception of outer space radio signals. Amazingly, the size of the dish is larger than a football feed and the telescope is taller than the Statue of Liberty.
A Glimpse of CLIMSO (Nov 25 2011) Image Credit & Copyright: Alain Sallez (picdumidi.org) A tantalizing glimpse inside this dome was captured after sunset at the mountain top Pic Du Midi Observatory in the French Pyrenees. But while most are just beginning their work at sunset, this observatory's day was done. The instrument looming within is CLIMSO (for Christian Latouche IMageur Solaire), dedicated to exploring dynamic phenomena across the surface and atmosphere of the Sun. #astronomy
