Smarty Jones is a US thoroughbred race horse, and winner of the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. He finished second in the Belmont Stakes that took place on June 5, 2004.

Now 14, thoroughbred stallion, Smarty Jones. He won the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness, and was second in the Belmont Stakes. While great horses are in his lineage, he is a PA homebred, and never considered true thoroughbred 'royalty'. This under-rated reputation made him a fan favorite. photo: Barbara Livingston.

This photo was taken in May 2004 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. The horse, Stephan's Angel, was not very happy being saddled for the Miss Preakness Stakes and leaped straight up in the air. She went on to finish second in the race and is now a broodmare on a farm in Kentucky. This photo was printed in Mid Atlantic Thoroughbred magazine and won the Eclipse Award for best thoroughbred horse racing photo of 2004.
