Navy won the 2014 Army-Navy Blood Donor Challenge! CDR Riggs (right), director of the Navy Blood Program, accepts the trophy. Trophies also awarded to the biggest drives during challenge; Fort Belvoir drive and the Naval Academy drive. Dr. Karen Scott, chief medical officer for the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, DHSS, visits the WRNMMC to review the first U.S. DOD technology.  This new technology offers a significant improvement in blood safety. Pathogen reduced platelet products recently approved by the FDA reduce the risks from known, emerging and future transfusion-transmitted infections.

More than 100 pints of blood were collected during the drive. USAF pilots flew the staff and blood back to 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss, TX so the blood could be processed & quickly shipped overseas for our warfighters. (Photo by Lori A.
