Young Lady Sewing, 17th century. After the painting in the State Museum of A. S. Pushkin, Moscow. Copy after Gabriel Metsu, Dutch (active Leiden and Amsterdam), 1629 - 1667.  The object on her lap is a Dutch sewing pillow or "naaikussen." It is a box that you store sewing supplies inside, and the top and bottom are padded, often covered in velvet.
