VERBIER - SWITZERLAND Like Chamonix, Verbier is a magnet for extreme skiers, to get the best out of this place, hire a guide and hit the off-piste. This is not a great on-piste resort but people say one of the best challenging areas in the world. I only came here for a day and didn't really get the best out of it.
CHAMONIX - FRANCE It goes with out saying, Chamonix sets the standard for extreme skiing and boarding. My family has a chalet in the valley. Nowhere in world has alpine scenery like this with such towering mountains and endless off-piste. Shame everyone else knows about it. In order to get the best, only come when you've got the skills and hire a guide if funds allow.
LES CONTAMINES - FRANCE is a smallish family resort just around the corner from the Chamonix valley, you can make fresh powder tracks for days after a dump of snow unlike the feeding frenzy in better known ski areas like Grandes Montets nearby. It is less challenging, but far cheaper and a great week can be had.
COURMAYEUR - ITALY Just the other side of Mt Blanc from Chamonix yet a world apart. Strongly Italian in character, its way more laid back and quaint. Not as challenging as Grandes Montets but you are more likely to make fresh tracks here and enjoy excellent Italian food on the mountain. You'll also get friendly Italian service with a smile.
