This is Adwaita a 550ib male Aldabra giant tortoise who was presented as a gift to Lord Clive (1725-1774) British seafarers had previously captured Adwaita and three other tortoises in the Seychelles near Madagascar. Estimated to have been born circa 1750, Adwaita lived at the Alipore Zoological Gardens in Kolkata, India, from 1875 to the time of his death on March 23rd 2006. Subsequent radiocarbon dating of Adwaita's shell confimed an age of approximately 255 years. Amazing!
Galapagos Islands, Ecuador This archipelago, 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, is famous for its high number of endemic species (which don't include the green sea turtle, but it's still damn cute) and its influence on Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Photo: blichb
