Cotton candy was invented in 1897 by William Morrison and John C. Wharton, candy makers from Nashville, Tennessee, USA. They invented a device that heated sugar in a spinning bowl that had tiny holes in it. It formed a treat that they originally called “Fairy Floss.” As the bowl spun around, the caramelized sugar was forced through the tiny holes, making feathery candy that melts in the mouth.
I wanted a more grown up yet girly cake for my 9 year old with a carnival/party theme. The dark colour looks red on the photos but was actually a deep pink. I loved doing the pinwheels - thanks to the people on CC that have posted bunting & pinwheel cakes for the inspiration
Helga, the "Fat Lady" in the circus side show was simply FURIOUS! Zeke, the owner, spent a whole $150 on Frannie's specially downsized hula hoop! Sheesh! What was he thinking? Frannie just trailed after the elephants for GAWD'S sake! Helga was an entire attraction!
