imagine my surprise at the wildly mixed reviews by readers of this offbeat new novel. maybe some were turned off by main character jane jenkins' unrepentant, irreverent haughtiness. certainly several cite great displeasure with the novel's surprising, gutsy ending. i loved both aspects of this original, clever debut.
a funky, engaging glimpse of the lives of two offbeat nyc families, "modern lovers" is the perfect summer read. set, in fact, over the course of one summer, straub's characters come alive with just the right touch of amused insight. the book's ending is both upbeat and satisfying.
