Glyn Philpot (England 1884-1937), Henry Thomas, o/c, 1934-35. Philpot had a strong feeling for the social outsider, becaming known for his sympathetic paintings of black male models. This portrait is of his West Indian servant Henry Thomas, who arrived from Jamaica as a stoker on a merchant vessel and missed his boat home. He was hired because of his good looks rather than his reliability and domestic skills which were, by all accounts, limited. Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, England.
