Birth & baptismal certificate for Eliesabetta Scheffer, c. 1796 - Attributed to Christian Mertel (1739–1802). Mount Joy Township, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania; Watercolor & ink on laid paper; 12 × 15 in. A German immigrant, Christian Mertel arrived in Philadelphia in 1773. Trained as a blue dyer, he became a schoolmaster & fraktur artist. The six birds on this certificate are typical of his work, each with Mertel’s characteristic circular head with a central dot for the eye.
