The "corps de logis," or principal block, at CASTLE HOWARD is very similar to EASTON NESTON. It seems likely Easton Neston was designed before Castle Howard. Was Vanbrugh influenced by Easton Neston? Was it Hawksmoor who define the proportions of this main block at Castle Howard? Does this suggest that Hawksmoor's role in the conception of Castle Howard, usually credited to John Vanbrugh entirely, was substantially greater than generally assumed?
