Poppy the folding caravan

Poppy is a 1979 liteweight expander, a clever hard-side folding caravan made in New Zealand in the 70s and 80s. She's currently undergoing renovation. I can't find any other examples on Pinterest and thought others might be interested in mine!

One end of the caravan folded out. A 2-year old sleeps here, so I made a side to stop her rolling out at night. A single bed folds/pops out each end of the caravan. They can easily hold an adult.

Replaced the folding table with thin squabs with a full double bed. Note the construction keeps it light! The top section (plus mattress) folds up to allow access for storage.

A photo of the new shelf. Three baskets (60cm x 40cm x 20cm) fit perfectly across the width. The shelf folds flat against the end when the caravan folds away, and the baskets sit on the floor.

The new ceiling - laminated bamboo (carbonised) sheets, with a centre section of thin Lawson Cypress. A cluster of LED down lights in each section.

The caravan partially unfolded. The ends fold out one at a time as the roof comes up. The clamps are from the renovation work.

Trying out the caravan in the back yard just after we purchased it. Folds down to a trailer, but has hard sides. Sleeps an amazing 5 people very comfortably!

The original brochure for the 1979 Liteweight Expander (New Zealand). A very clever design, with folding, hard sides rather than the canvas sides seen in most pop-tops. As in the brochure, putting it up or down with just one person is fine.
