Virtual field trips: Smart Motorways

School students can meet the experts making New Zealand’s first smart motorway. This will reduce congestion by carefully controlling the flow of vehicles. As the volume of traffic increases, the smart motorway automatically adjusts the speed limit to reduce congestion. The aim is to help drivers get to where they're going safely, more quickly and with less stress. First virtual field trip: Term 3 starting 25 August 2015

Creating another northbound lane from the Aotea on-ramp to the State Highway 1/ State Highway 2 split is an important part of achieving the objectives of this project.  As part of the effort to find space for the fourth lane, an unused bridge stub is being brought back into service.  It’s a technically challenging task to lift and move a 300 tonne, two-piece bridge. To achieve the task, the team will use up to eight hydraulic jacks, each capable of lifting 100 tonnes.
