Tagging

Tagging animals is not unusual - go out to any local farm and you'll see a variety of tags in use. Scientists also tag animals. Tags range from basic name tags to electronic tags like 'geo-locators'. So why do we tag different animals? What types of animals get tagged and the big question - how do you tag an animal - especially a wild one?

PODCAST: WILDLIFE TAGS PLAY INTO POACHERS' HANDS. Hunters are using signals from radio tags to track at-risk species, including wolves and sharks, a group of biologists says. Use this podcast to start a conversation on technology and unintended consequences or to introduce an #innovation activity - 'Redesign a tag to make it safe from poachers'?

The petrels of Ile aux Cochons, Iles Kerguelen: Why do scientists attach GPS loggers and geolocators to (very obliging) seabirds? What happens when the birds moult? How do we retrieve the data, and what stories does it tell?

In order to better understand animals, researchers frequently tag them with microchips. Unfortunately for scientists, starfish just aren't having it.

TEACHING RESOURCE. Regulating transgenic cow research. Sometimes tagging is not specific to the research but a requirement of regulating organisations. For example ERMA require robust identification of cows being used in transgenic research. Each cow has two forms of ID (for example, an ear tag and microchip).

Although scientists have been tagging sea creatures for decades, ocean researcher Nigel Hussey says the latest improvements in tracking technology mean scientists can do much more than follow an animal’s location. He says researchers can now use “animals as oceanographers.” #animals #science #tech
