The Fomalhaut system contains a cleared ring (shining brightly in this image) in the dust around the star. Scientists suspect that this gap was cleared by a pair of terrestrial planets, but new research reveals that the presence of gas could also create such a breach. CREDIT: NASA, ESA, and P. The Supermassive Black Hole in Galaxy Centaurus A "Centaurus A is the fifth brightest galaxy in the sky — making it an ideal target for amateur astronomers — and is famous for the dust lane across its middle (bottom image) and a giant jet blasting away from the supermassive black hole at its center (top image)." Centaurus A is an active galaxy about 12 million light years from Earth located in the constellation Centaurus. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Hubble

The cosmic "ice sculptures" of the Carina Nebula. Scientists are still trying to explain the ice sculptures. This picture may be a photo shopped rendering of the ice pillars because it is much more detailed than photos currently on Hubble's site. A nebula from Latin: "cloud"is an interstellar cloud of dust, hydrogen, helium and other ionized gases. Originally, nebula was a name for any diffuse astronomical object, including galaxies beyond the Milky Way.
