Sofia Minson; From her Auckland studio Sofia Minson paints large-scale portrait and landscape oil works. Sofia's mixed Maori and European ancestry are explored in her paintings. Having lived in Samoa, Sri Lanka and China for much of her childhood she is also inspired by the unity she sees amongst richly diverse cultures.

Sofia Minson.     "He kotuku rerenga tahi" is a whakatauki or proverb, which means "a white heron's flight is seen but once". It is used to indicate a very special and rare event and in this case refers to the arrival of Kupe and his waka Matawhaorua.

Sofia Minson.    Sabire, Woman with Patience.    Inspiration for this work came from an old woman Sofia met and photographed in Turkey in June 2008. On a walk through the beautiful Kapadokyan landscape, Sofia briefly encountered the woman waiting patiently with her collection of scarves to display and sell to passers-by.

Sofia is also of Irish heritage, with her full-blooded Maori great-grandmother marrying an immigrant Irishman in the late 19th century.
