"Te Matau a Māui" means 'The Fishhook of Māui'. A Kōtuku (white heron) is pictured towing this colossal bone carving towards Mt Hikurangi. The graceful Kōtuku is traditionally a symbol of good fortune and marks the arrival of a rare and sacred visitor. This work was inspired by the old stories of Māui as told by my Ngāti Porou ancestors from the east coast of the North Island. Māui was a demi-god who came from Hawaiiki, the legendary homeland of Māori.
This week I'd love to honour Mana Tāne, which to me has a similar feel to Divine Masculine or Yang energy. Mana is authority, prestige and spiritual power. Like Mana Wāhine, the Divine Feminine, I think of Mana Tāne as being a quality of energy rather than to do with gender. We all have access to both yin and yang energy and can harness them for different reasons. This portrait is of Ranginui, the Sky Father above, who is the heaven nearest to earth, his lover Papatūānuku, Earth Mother.
