Frances Mary Hodgkins (1869–1947) was a painter chiefly of landscape and still life, and for a short period was a designer of textiles. Born in Dunedin, NZ, but spent most of her working life in Britain. She painted into her 70s and was was regarded as one of Britain’s leading artists.
Frances Hodgkins ‘Loveday and Ann: Two Women with a Basket of Flowers’, 1915. I love this painting: the use of colour and combination of texture and pattern. I also enjoy the contrast between the areas that feel drawn and the very painterly parts: it is an oil painting but appears to be handled almost like pastel in some areas (especially their faces).
