Hei-Tiki, jade, New Zealand, 19th century. The Tiki carvings are found thoughout Polynesia but in New Zealand they were carved from the local greenstone (jade) and worn as treasure. This early one was probably carved without metal tools and has paua (mother-of-pearl) shell inlay in the eyes.
