Kawakawa is well used in Rongoā, the Maori medicinal use of plants. Kawakawa traditionally was used internally to tone the kidneys and help with stomach problems. Externally it was used for cuts, wounds, boils, abscesses, and nettle stings. It was also used for rheumatism and other aches and pains as well as toothache. The Kawakawa's botanical name is Piper excelsum (formerly known as Macropiper excelsum). It is a lowland tree found commonly around New Zealand.
