Fifth graders painted a 9 x 12 paper in only the cool colors of green/blue/violets, and then painted a 12 x 18 paper in the hot colors of yellow/red/orange. When salt is sprinkled on the watercolor, it absorbs some of the paint, leaving a very cool effect which the students loved! We tore the cool colored painting which left a white edge on the paper to simulate the whitecaps of waves. Each student had to add something to their seascape to complete it.
Colorful Math Art Project for Kids Inspired by the Artist Klee
We were inspired to create our project by the Castle and Sun work of Paul Klee. He fit a variety of shapes into a space to create a castle scene. We took the same principles and gave the kids a sheet of paper. They had to completely fill their page with the shapes.
