Frans Masereel (1889-1972) was een Vlaamse graficus en houtsnijder. Het moderne leven in de grote steden tijdens de eerste helft van de twintigste eeuw is door hem in houtsneden weergegeven.Hij reist veel en rond 1910 gaat hij in Parijs wonen en komt daar toevallig in aanraking met de houtsnede. Tot 1920 verschijnen een kleine duizend tekeningen in dagelijkse afleveringen in het pacifistische tijdschrift "La Feuille", waarbij hij de verschrikkingen van de oorlog in beeld brengt.
