The placement of the cathedral within the city demonstrates its importance to life of medieval citizens. Religious pilgrims needed a place to eat and sleep and, no doubt, purchased souvenirs along the way.
Romanesque style is marked by great variation in decoration. The carvings are very geometric and appear above the portal (archway) into a cathedral. Note the columns are slender with a smallish capital.
Vézelay Cathedral Romanesque Nave The nave is composed of immense transverse arches creating a domical vault. There is no triforium, but small windows appear at the clerestory level illuminating the the vault and the huge supporting piers.
