"Recouvrance" is the ambassador boat and the property of the city of Brest, in Brittany. It is the replica of a military boat of the beginning last century, intended originally to transmit folds or urgent notices in Africa and the West Indies.

Jean Lafitte and his brother Pierre became wealthy through successful smuggling operations in Louisiana. Later they engaged in piracy in the Gulf, owning a whole fleet of ships employing 200 men, and partnering with Jim Bowie for a time. Lafitte established a pirate colony and fortress on Galveston Island called Campeche. Lafitte was killed in 1823 in battle attempting to capture a fleet of Spanish vessels.
