Jean Lafitte and his brother Pierre became wealthy through successful smuggling operations in Louisiana. Later they engaged in piracy in the Gulf, owning a whole fleet of ships employing 200 men, and partnering with Jim Bowie for a time. Lafitte established a pirate colony and fortress on Galveston Island called Campeche. Lafitte was killed in 1823 in battle attempting to capture a fleet of Spanish vessels.
