Bohemia was a region in Europe--that region is now known as the Czech Republic. Bohémien was a French term for the Romani (Gypsy), who had reached Western Europe via (what was then called) Bohemia. And the term Bohemianism, comes from early nineteenth century France, when artists moved into the lower-rent Romani areas of the city. So, to over simplify--the word Bohemian is the convergence of the French artists and the Gypsy families all living together in the lower-class neighborhoods.
