Arts and Crafts movement

Where would we be without the Arts and Crafts movement at the turn of the 20th century? The movement stood for traditional craftsmanship and favoured craft production over industrial manufacture. Its key figures (William Morris, among others) were concerned about the loss of traditional skills, and the effects of the factory system and division of labour.

"William Morris" by George Frederic Watts, 1870 (National Portrait Gallery). -- Henry James described William Morris as "the poet and paper-maker" in 1881. Reinventing the decorative vocabulary of his time, Morris believed that "any decoration is futile … when it does not remind you of something beyond itself."
