Value refers to how light or dark color is. Value is an essential element in drawings and paintings. This article explains how value is the key to a successful painting, not color.

Learn how to start your painting with clear color values! It is important to think of value first while you are painting. Doing so will help you to be able to create a believable sense of light in your paintings right from the start. One of the best ways you can achieve this, is by thinking in terms of color spots. 4th grade began their winter sky value study this week. Value is the lightness and darkness of an object. After seeing a similar painting on Pinterest, I decide to teach value and color mixing to 4th grade using this beautiful night time sky scene. It's perfect for a winter's night, don't you think? We first drew a circle for the moon, then starting with white, we gradually began mixing varying shades of blue then purple and lastly, black. More pictures to come as they are completed!

For some reason I find it easiest to teach value by going paint, then crayon, then colored pencil then graphite. So we start with paint. Official definition of Value (tone, tint, shade...) "refers to the use of light and dark, shade and highlight, in an artwork." Middle school definition of value..."this is hard, why do we have to do this....I want to do something fun!" Ah teaching value at a more advanced level can be a pain in the butt. I find younger students are perfectly happy to learn…
