Russian Crown Jewels

PRINCESS ANNE has a remarkable connection to the mystery of what happened to Russia's lost crown jewels after the Bolshevik revolution of 1917.

Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna's jewels for the 1903 Court Ball. Briolette diamond aigrettes, which Cartier set in a tiara in 1908 (see image 1), and an emerald necklace (2 & 3) adorned her headdress (7). On her bosom, she wore an emerald brooch (4) that once belonged to Catherine the Great. Below this was pinned a large sapphire that became the central stone of a Cartier tiara commissioned in 1909 (6). A 1913 portrait by Boris Kustodiev shows her wearing this sapphire and diamond diadem (5).

30th September and today's tiara is the Grand Duchess Vladimir Sapphire Tiara. It was made for her by Cartier in 1906 incorporating some historic Russian sapphires that could be worn as brooches. It left the family at the time of the Revolution, either sold by Grand Duchess Vladimir, or her son Grand Duke Cyril. It was bought by Queen Marie of Romania, to help replace the jewels she had lost to Russia. She left it to her youngest daughter, Ileana, who would sell it back to Cartier in 1950.

One of the most imposing pieces in a collection full of imposing pieces, this pearl and diamond tiara was referred to as the Diadem of Ancient Pearls in Russia's imperial family. Made in the early 19th century, it is a complicated structure of Brazilian diamonds and ancient pearls, with a graduated top line and a center row of dangling pearl drops.
