Robert Graves volunteered for military service in 1914—wounded in 1916 at the Battle of the Somme—and completed three volumes of poetry before the war ended. He published in 1929 his memoir, Good-bye to All That, where he observes that his father’s side of the family was “antisentimental to the point of insolence,” while his mother’s side was “noble and patient.” Graves

Robert Graves, c. 1914, age 19. Reported dead at the Somme, Graves was one of the few of his generation to survive the war. He became a translator, poet, and novelist, and was the author of I, Claudius. Graves died at the age of 90 in 1985, a model Daguerreotype boyfriend if there ever was one.
