In the Saudi Arabian desert, the Al Naslaa rock formation looks completely unnatural. Its perfectly vertical split remains a mystery.

The Moenave sandstone formation is a relatively soft sandstone layer that lends itself well to being sculpted by eons of erosion courtesy of wind driven sandstorms and sporadic deluges of rain and snowstorms. Layers of gypsum from arid periods lend this formation some beautiful white striations that interlace with the red/purple sandstone. They were formed 30 million years ago from minute fragments of dead marine creatures and plants landed on the seabed about 2 km below the surface. Immense water pressure caused the fragments to solidify in hard and soft layers.
