My garden is made up almost entirely of edible or medicinal plants but not many edibles like deep shade. So here I’ve made an exception. A beautiful exception. 

This is a hydrangea, but very different from the big, blousy pink and purple numbers that grace so many front gardens. 

It is Hydrangea petiolaris, a deciduous climbing hydrangea. It does best in deep shade or partial shade and, once established, it climbs without needing support and will easily cover an unsightly fence or even the wall of a house.
