Now, for me, this really applies to charcoal pencils and not graphite ones (though I know some who do this with their graphite pencils too). I use a utility knife to whittle the pencil down, exposing a long section of the charcoal. I then shape the charcoal to a point with the knife or with sandpaper. You have to be careful as the charcoal can break easily, and the knife can cut you.
