Chiaroscuro is an art historical term dating from the Renaissance period, referring to the dramatic, theatrical modelling of light and dark.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was one of the greatest artists of the Dutch ‘Golden Age’. He gained fame by creating distinctive portraits in which chiaroscuro played a great role. His paintings were acclaimed by his contemporaries, and he won a fortune and well-deserved fame. Later, however, he passed into oblivion, and many tragedies befell him in his personal life.
